FLSA

HR is responsible for determining the pay status of all classified employees and for compliance with the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Classified staff fall into the following FLSA categories:

Exempt personnel - The classification of exempt employees as provided by FLSA specifies that such employees are not entitled to additional pay or compensatory time for hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a given work week. Schedules may be adjusted when necessary to facilitate completion of assigned duties or to ensure equity. Examples of exempt employees include but are not limited to directors, managers, and professionals. These salaried employees are paid on a monthly basis.

Non-exempt personnel - Employees with duties that do not meet the criteria to be exempt from the provisions of the FLSA are considered hourly paid employees. Non-exempt employees are eligible to be compensated for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week as specified by KSU policy. Examples of non-exempt employees include but are not limited to skilled and non-skilled trade workers and clerical staff. Non-exempt staff are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
