Short Term Disability
Kennesaw State University offers Short Term Disability insurance through the Metlife. Short Term Disability provides you with income replacement should you become disabled due to a non-occupational accident or sickness.
Short Term Disability Benefits
If you become disabled due to a non-occupational accident or sickness (including pregnancy), you are eligible to receive benefits equal to 60% of your weekly pay up to a maximum weekly benefit of $2,500. To apply for Short Term Disability benefits, you must call Metlife at 1-866-832-5759. Review the Metlife How to File a Claim flyer for details on the information you will need and how the process works. Metlife approves or denies all claims. Short Term Disability benefits begin on the 15th calendar day after the start of the disability and continue up to a maximum of 11 weeks.
Paid Leave Accrual and Short Term Disability
You are required to use your sick leave accruals while out on a medical leave of absence. If you have short term disability coverage, you must freeze your paid sick time while being paid disability. Once short term disability is exhausted and you are still out on leave, you can start being paid sick time. Once sick is exhausted, you may elect to use vacation hours. Hours will be utilized in whole day increments.
If you participate in the Donated Sick Leave Program you will not be considered to receive a donation until all of your own paid leave time has been exhausted and you do not have any Short Term Disability benefits.
Evidence of InsurabilityIf you do not elect to enroll in the Short Term Disability insurance during your initial eligibility and elect to enroll during Open Enrollment, you will be required to complete an Evidence of Insurability form and be approved through the Metlife.
Monthly Rate CalculationYou pay for Short Term Disability coverage with after-tax dollars. Visit USG Disability at-a-glance for details.
